Tour Overview

Wildlife Safari, Coastal Scenery and Historic Galle in 2 Days

Sri Lanka is a wonderful island for travelers who want both nature and culture. This 2 day tour is designed for guests who want to experience a real wildlife safari and a beautiful south coast heritage destination without rushing everything into one long day.

The tour starts from Ahungalla or nearby hotel areas and travels towards the Yala or Tissamaharama area. Yala National Park is famous for wildlife, dry-zone landscapes, lakes, forest areas, birds, elephants and the chance of seeing leopards. Wildlife sightings always depend on nature, but Yala remains one of the most exciting safari parks in Sri Lanka.

After the safari experience, the tour continues along the south coast towards Galle. Galle Fort is one of Sri Lanka’s most charming cultural destinations, with old streets, fort walls, ocean views, cafes, shops and colonial buildings. It is a perfect ending to this short overnight tour before returning to Ahungalla.

This tour is ideal for couples, families, wildlife lovers, photographers, culture lovers and hotel guests who want a stronger Sri Lanka experience during their beach holiday.

Tour Highlights

What You Can Experience on This Tour

2 Day Yala Safari and Galle Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Ahungalla to Yala or Tissamaharama
From the Beach Coast to Sri Lanka’s Famous Safari Region

Your tour begins with pickup from your hotel in Ahungalla or a nearby area. We can also arrange pickup from Balapitiya, Kosgoda, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Galle or nearby villas and beach hotels depending on your location.

The journey from Ahungalla to Yala takes you along Sri Lanka’s southern side, passing beach towns, local villages, countryside scenery and changing landscapes. As you travel closer to the Yala region, the environment becomes drier and more open, giving you the feeling of entering Sri Lanka’s wildlife country.

Yala is one of the island’s most famous national parks and is loved by travelers who want an exciting safari experience. The park is known for its natural landscapes, wildlife variety and the possibility of seeing animals in their natural environment.

Depending on your preferred timing, the safari can be arranged in the afternoon on Day 1, or the tour can be adjusted for a morning safari on Day 2.

Main Activities
  • Hotel pickup from Ahungalla or nearby area
  • Scenic drive towards Yala or Tissamaharama
  • Lunch or refreshment stop depending on timing
  • Check in to hotel near Yala or Tissamaharama
  • Afternoon Yala National Park safari, if selected
  • Look for elephants, deer, crocodiles, buffaloes, birds and other wildlife

Don’t Miss

The safari experience inside Yala National Park. The excitement of entering the park by jeep and watching wildlife in their natural setting is the main highlight of Day 1.

Optional Add-On

If you prefer a slower Day 1, you can skip the afternoon safari and arrange the safari early on Day 2. This is useful for families or travelers who want more rest after the drive.

Accommodation

Hotel can be arranged near Yala or Tissamaharama based on your preferred category and budget. You may also book your own hotel if preferred.

Meal Plan

Meals are based on the confirmed package. Breakfast is usually included when hotel accommodation is arranged, but this depends on the final hotel booking.

Travel Note

This is a full travel and safari day, so an early pickup from Ahungalla is recommended.

South Coast Heritage, Ocean Views and Galle Fort Charm

After breakfast, begin the journey back towards the south-west coast. If you did not do the safari on Day 1, a morning Yala safari can be arranged before breakfast or before departure, depending on the hotel location and final tour plan.

After the safari or hotel check-out, continue towards Galle. The return journey takes you through Sri Lanka’s southern region, where coastal scenery, local towns and ocean views create a relaxed travel feeling.

Galle Fort is the main highlight of Day 2. This historic coastal town is one of the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka, with Dutch colonial streets, old fort walls, sea views, a lighthouse, boutique shops, cafes and charming walking paths. It is a very different experience from Yala and adds a cultural ending to the tour.

After exploring Galle Fort, continue back to Ahungalla or your nearby hotel area.

Main Activities
  • Breakfast and check-out from hotel
  • Morning safari if not done on Day 1, subject to selected plan
  • Drive along the south coast towards Galle
  • Visit Galle Fort

Best Time For This Tour

This tour can be arranged throughout the year, but safari timing and weather can affect the experience. Yala safaris are usually arranged in the morning or afternoon. The best option depends on travel time, park conditions, hotel location and guest comfort.

For a 2 day tour from Ahungalla, we usually recommend either an early start with an afternoon safari on Day 1 or a relaxed arrival with a morning safari on Day 2.

Wildlife sightings depend on nature, season, weather and animal movement. Yala is known for wildlife and leopards, but no responsible tour operator can guarantee specific animal sightings.

Galle Fort can be visited throughout the year. Morning or late afternoon walks are usually more comfortable than the hot middle of the day.

What to Wear and Bring

This tour includes safari, coastal sightseeing and walking inside Galle Fort, so comfortable clothing is recommended.

We suggest bringing:

  • Comfortable light clothing
  • Comfortable walking shoes or sandals
  • Hat or cap
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Water bottle
  • Camera or phone
  • Power bank if needed
  • Small amount of cash for entrance fees, jeep fees, meals and tips
  • Overnight bag
  • Personal medicines if required
  • Light jacket if doing an early morning safari

For safari, neutral or soft-coloured clothing is useful but not compulsory. For Galle Fort, comfortable walking footwear is recommended.

Yala National Park is a protected wildlife area, and Galle Fort is an important heritage site. Please enjoy both places with respect.

During the safari:

  • Do not feed animals
  • Do not throw plastic or rubbish
  • Do not make loud noises near wildlife
  • Do not ask the safari driver to chase animals

  • During Galle Fort sightseeing:
  • Respect heritage buildings
  • Do not litter
  • Be polite in local shops and cafes
  • Avoid entering private properties
  • Take photos respectfully

At Riu Lanka Tours, we encourage guests to enjoy Sri Lanka’s wildlife and culture in a responsible and respectful way.

Accommodation Note

For this 2 day tour, accommodation is usually arranged near Yala or Tissamaharama. This gives better access to Yala National Park and helps with safari timing.

Hotel options can be selected based on your preferred style:

  • Budget-friendly hotels
  • Comfort-level hotels
  • Boutique-style stays
  • Family-friendly properties
  • Higher-category hotels on request

If you already have a preferred hotel, you can book it directly and we can arrange the transport and tour route around your booking.
